5 Ingredients That Should Never Be in Your Skincare Products

There’s no shortage of messages about bad foods. Everyone knows fast foods aren’t good for you. But it seems with skincare, those conversations aren’t as common.

Many people actually buy their products in the supermarket, favouring price over quality. And this isn’t their fault. There simply isn’t enough education out there about what’s really in these products.

Nasty chemicals in skincare

Now, we’re not just talking about ingredients that can make your skin flare up. Some of these ingredients are causing hormone disruption, neurotoxicity, cancer and birth defects. This is why it’s extremely important to do your research about the ingredients before applying anything to your skin.

Let’s take a look at the chemicals to watch out for.

  1. Phthalates

Used in plastics and solvents, phthalates don’t belong on your skin. It’s often found in fragrances, hair products, nail polish and skincare products. It can negatively affect endocrine properties, including reproductive organ abnormalities and reduced fertility.

  1. Parabens

Methyl paraben can also negatively impact endocrine in women. Be wary of the following parabens – Isopropylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Phenylparaben, Benzylparaben and Pentylparaben.

  1. Nanoparticles

Titanium dioxide or zinc oxide have been linked with cellular damage, including damage to DNA. Used in thousands of products to achieve a brighter pigment in the skin, these chemicals are not safe.

  1. Resorcinol

Common in acne treatment skincare, resorcinol can irritate the skin and cause thyroid dysfunction when used in large quantities over a long period of time.

  1. UV filters

Some skincare products double as a sun protectant. Chemical sunscreens often use octyl methoxycinnamate (also called OMC or ethylhexyl methoxy cinnamate), as well as 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC), homosalate and oxybenzone. All have been found to be dangerous to children and pregnant women.

Keep your eyes peeled for formaldehyde and formaldehyde donors, lead acetate, triclosan, toluene, and BHA. Stop the ‘it’s on the shelves, it must be safe’ mindset and take your health into your own hands.
