How to Prevent Bags Under Your Eyes

You get up, walk into the bathroom and see those damn bags under your eyes. It’s not like red spots, where you can easily cover them up. Or that infectious yawn, where it’s over in three seconds and you can continue to ‘hide’ your tiredness.

Those ‘bags’ take more of a long-term, everyday approach to prevent puffy eyes and dark under-eye circles. The first (and easiest) thing you can do is go to bed early and have a good night’s sleep.

Make sure your environment is right. By this, we mean getting comfortable in your bed, perfecting the temperature and amount of light. If you need silence, communicate this with your family so everyone’s quiet after, say, 11pm.

At night…

Have a cup of tea and a glass of water before bed. If you struggle with a racing mind once you hit the pillow, consider making mediation a bedtime habit. Position your head slightly elevated. Under-eye bags can be caused by fluid pooling in the face while you sleep.

In the morning…

Drink lots of water during the day to let your body flush out accumulated liquids, rather than retaining the ‘puff.’

Exercise those bags away. It’s a natural way to promote a youthful glow, especially around your eyes. Get moving every day, even if it’s a few light stretches and a walk around the block. Any activity will help get the blood flowing and sweep away the physical and mental dullness of sleep. This is the best way to start your day.

Once you’ve finished a light (or intense) workout, don’t forget to treat your skin. Cleanse your face and moisturise the under-eye area with an Eye Serum. Before you apply your makeup, add a protective serum to your face. When you get home at the end of the day, wash your face clean again, then apply an eye patch treatment to nourish the area.

Also be conscious about the type of foods and drinks you’re consuming. Watch the amount of salt you eat, limit alcohol and for all you smokers out there, here’s another great reason to quit.

Boost your collagen intake through your diet. Try chicken broth or even collagen protein powder. And on those hot days, keep the ends of the cucumber and rest a piece on each eye socket. It’s relaxing and great for swollen, puffy eyes.

Finally, put those bags to bed.
